November 2015
Over Thanksgiving the Forshee family went on a family get away to the city that never sleeps. Lack of sleep was right and we got a work out we weren’t expecting. My Fitbit almost reached over 30,000 steps and up to 52 flights of stairs each day. This big bustling city was full of adventure and sights to see, each reachable by an underground network of trains known as the subway.
Being the over planner I am, I had our New York trip mapped out to an art form. Every spare minute in between numerous Broadway shows was productive. We were lucky enough to see four shows thanks to Graham’s parents including American in Paris, The Curious Incident of the Dog, Phantom of the Opera and Finding Neverland. Each was special in its own way but the Phantom of the Opera was defiantly in its own category- it is the longest running musical for a reason after all. We also saw the famous Rockets at the Rockefeller Centre with their never-ending legs being flown around in perfect sequence.
We did most of the big 10 including the Top of the Rock (at night), Empire State Building, the MET, the Museum of Natural Science, the Empire State building, Elise island museum and Statue of Liberty, 9/11 Memorial and Museum, Central Park by Horse and Carriage ride (famous movie scenes and strawberry fields), Grand Central Station, United Nations, Macys Thanksgiving parade, the big beautifully decorated departments stores and windows, China Town, Little Italy, Wall Street, the charging bull and of course Times Square where our hotel was-very spoilt! Each of the sights was amazing in its own way. What I found even more memorable was the emotions and feelings along the way from the hair-raising pain of 9/11 to the enchantment and bliss of escaping in central park.
The nightlife was fun. We experienced everything form very expensive and fancy wine bars to quaint little underground bars with specialty brews. We also saw some hilarious underground comedy at which the late night ‘nasty’ show had no boundaries, taking a stab at as many controversial issues as possible.
Security was plentiful in general and I did not feel unsafe at any time. Terrorists attacks are certainly nothing to be joked about, however the comedian was right when he said that if Times Square blew up we would have about 10,000 less Chinese tourists talking pictures of themselves on the big TV screen. I am sure all New Yorkers avoid Times Square at all costs to avoid the crazy crowds and absurd prices. Not even Australia charges three dollars for your basic plastic water bottle, when the tap water is perfectly drinkable.
On our last night we went out to celebrate Graham’s 31st birthday. We went to an A-list steakhouse calls Keens, where numerous famous presidents and celebrities had previously carved away at their famous and monstrous Mutton Chops. Graham had done so much research to pick the most special place. We certainly will remember this birthday dinner because the guest of honor was actually not even there. Graham had either caught a bug or had a serious hang over from birthday shots the night before. He could not keep anything down for the entire day. All the extra kilos he gained from delicious delis (including Katz Delicatessen, Murrey’s Bagels, fancy French restaurants and Donald Trump Tower bar and grill) were gone again after just one day. Luckily our meals at the steakhouse were so big he had plenty of left over’s and birthday cake to try for breakfast the next day.
New York City was jam-packed! New York City is one big incredible city! It was a wonderful adventure with great company!
